New Canadian Kid
"One of the best school assemblies I've ever seen."
- SR, teacher, Jason Lee
Elementary
Thinking People's Theatre continues its production of New Canadian Kid, by Dennis Foon, based on a concept by Jane Howard Baker.
Nick
emigrates to Canada and discovers that a new way of life requires
openness, learning and giving from both sides. There's a lot of humor
involved as Nick and new friends find differences and similarities in
language, culture and customs. Nick faces bullying, and has to develop
strategies for dealing with it.
"An exceptional show, with honest performances that engage both
students and adults, this production of New Canadian Kid is both funny
and smart, while focusing on a challenge that we all face everyday -
adapting to change."
- Young Audiences
Language is the centerpiece of New Canadian Kid.
We hear the "Homelanders" in English, but we hear the Canadians in
gibberish - how someone who did not speak English would hear them.
"I loved this play! My family moved here from Mexico when I was
seven and I completely identified with Nick's character. If you haven't
seen it, go! My kids asked a lot of questions about the social setting
of the school. It started a whole family discussion for us about what
it's like to be new to a country."
- RP, 10/11/03
The play runs about 42 minutes (plus a Question and Answer session
with the cast) and is suitable for the K-8 crowd and their handlers.
The cast includes Luke Dempsey as Nick, Jennette Zarko as Mench, Amy
Gray as Mug and Ruth Jenkins as Mom.
